Premium Slack Wax – Industrial Grade
Welcome to ASA Oil, your trusted international supplier of high-quality petrochemical products. Among our top-tier industrial offerings is premium Slack Wax. It is important to note that most petroleum industry substances, including this specific product, are classified as Substances of Unknown or Variable composition, Complex reaction products, or Biological materials (UVCB). At ASA Oil, we ensure our production meets the highest global standards for your manufacturing and processing needs.
What is Slack Wax?
Slack wax is a complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained from a petroleum fraction by solvent crystallization (solvent dewaxing) or as a distillation fraction from a very waxy crude. It consists predominantly of saturated straight and branched-chain hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C20. This distinct chemical composition makes it highly effective for specific commercial uses.
How is Slack Wax Used in Industry?
Slack wax is widely used in applications where product color and residual oil content are of minor importance. It serves as an excellent base material for heavy-duty applications. Primary industrial uses include:
- Impregnation of various industrial materials.
- Coating applications for moisture protection.
- Hydrophobing (waterproofing) of wood, textiles, and industrial products.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations
Safety is a priority when handling petrochemicals. Slack wax has a flashpoint of above 200 °C and an initial boiling point above 280 °C. It is not flammable according to UN GHS criteria, but it will burn under extreme conditions. It is neither self-reactive nor self-heating and does not undergo exothermic decomposition when heated. It remains semi-solid at room temperature and is best stored at temperatures around 80 °C, strictly separated from oxidizing agents.
Slack wax is of low toxicity when inhaled, swallowed, or in contact with skin based on laboratory animal studies. No irritation of skin or eyes has been observed, and there is no evidence of allergic skin reactions or respiratory sensitization. However, inhalation of hot vapors or mists may cause respiratory irritation. Appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) as well as procedures for safe handling and risk management controls—as described in the current Safety Data Sheet—should always be applied.
Due to its high kinematic viscosity at room temperature, it is not considered an aspiration hazard. Furthermore, it is not expected to be a germ cell mutagen, cause cancer, and there is no evidence of developmental or reproductive toxicity. Based on the above facts, this product is not classified for health hazards following UN GHS criteria.
Environmental Impact
The product is poorly soluble in water and will float on the surface. Tests on short- and long-term aquatic toxicity with fish, invertebrates, and algae concluded that these materials are practically non-toxic. While Slack wax is a UVCB substance, adverse effects on the environment are not expected. It is considered inherently biodegradable, and following UN GHS criteria, it is not classified for environmental hazards.
Note: The health, safety, and environmental considerations above are not applicable for used oils and waxes, as they may contain more hazardous substances introduced during end-user applications.
Storing and Transporting Slack Wax
Safe logistics are crucial for maintaining product integrity. Slack wax is mainly transported by road, rail, and in specialized barges. The temperature during storage and transport should be carefully maintained around 80 °C to keep it in a pumpable state. For containers or container linings, mild steel or high-density polyethylene is highly recommended.
Precautionary measures against static discharges must be undertaken during loading and unloading procedures, and all active operators must wear adequate personal protective equipment.
Risk Characterization Summary
Risks associated with exposure to these products have been evaluated across the entire “chain-of-commerce,” including manufacture, storage, product transfer, transportation, and customer applications. Slack wax is manufactured, stored, and transported to customers in closed systems. The product is considered to pose a low risk in all standard applications due to its non-hazardous nature.
This product stewardship summary is intended to give general information about the chemical addressed. It is not intended to provide an in-depth discussion of health and safety information. Additional technical data is available through the chemical’s applicable Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which should be consulted before use. This summary does not replace required regulatory or legal communication documents.
